Google is a surveillance capitalist. It is a factory farm that extracts from and exploits people. Why do you want to create a “Google of Europe?” Why do you want Europe to capitulate to Silicon Valley’s digital imperialism and become its taxpayer-paid R&D department? Let’s stipulate that getting commons funding means the products of the business must also be shared back with the commons. That’s the only way to avoid a tragedy of the commons and build a healthy public sphere. It would also encourage not just competition but also sharing.

Silicon Valkey’s model of technology (surveillance capitalism) is not the only way to fund and build technology. It’s just one very toxic way to do so. Let’s do better in the EU. We can, should, and must fund ethical tech from the commons for the common good. (End)

How can you make sure that you are not simply funding businesses that are specializing on permanent rent-seeking? Did you really think through all the incentives? Do you have very good reasons to think your model would have given us a better Google?

The European answer to Google is basically Toll Collect. Europe’s vision of a goverment funded institutionalized but profit generating digital industry might become an online version of BER with Leistungsschutzrecht.

The reason why the VC model was so successful is that it incentivizes making actual users happy as quickly and economically as possible, while encouraging disruption of existing, worse solutions. (Often at the expense of sustainability.)

This. VC wants quick profits (and an exit) and doesn't necessarily want a sustainable business. You quickly devolve in a situation where everything needs to be monitized (like user data) to maximize the profits of your investors.

This is why I advocate services businesses (also compatible with
#FOSS) that are tightly woven into the society from which they emerge. Their value is in their people and their capabilities - they can't be picked up and transferred somewhere else. They ARE a community.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
