The new is out! In this week's roundup of arachnid media, news, and scientific research: - mite & spider circadian rhythms - aquatic spider evolution - a surprising discovery about dragline silk - how to see face mites …and more!

Art challenge: No matter what you're drawing, put an invertebrate in it—no excuse. There's always room for at least 1 (one) invertebrate.

In conclusion: DO try this at home, kids! THIS HAS BEEN: Clanner-Engelshofen, B.M., French, L.E. & Reinholz, M. Methods for extraction and ex-vivo experimentation with the most complex human commensal, Demodex spp.. Exp Appl Acarol 80, 59–70 (2020).

Press down on the mites to see better. To get the mites to swell up/shrink down, all you need is salt water!

If you want to keep the mites alive a bit longer, leave them in the follicular cast/sebum plug.

Until now, the methods used to observe mites in follicular casts killed the mites. Peel-off masks let the mites survive a few days, and is also less painful for the human!

    this kills the face mite

"Healthy adult mites positioned ventral side down on agar plates almost immediately started walking over the surface...As the mites walk around without any food intake, they gradually grow weaker. Ultimately they stop moving and die"

    3. Watching mites! If you put them on a thin agar surface you can watch them walk around!!

    2. Prepping mites for microscopy - use fine tweezers to put pore plug horizontally on microscope slide. Press thick plugs down with cover slip and/or immerse in oil for better visibility - use a fine hair or eyelash glued to a rod to get mites feet-side down

    1. Extracting mites. You can use a blackhead remover (see pic), OR a peel-off mask or those pore strips if you want the whole follicle. These researchers made a version based on drugstore ones. Warning, this might get a little gross

"Virtually everyone with a microscope can examine and study Demodex mites." 🔬 There's also some other equipment involved but much of it is stuff the average person can get at the drugstore.

"Handling techniques: Most of the detailed instructions in this part are meant as a manual for researchers handling Demodex mites for the first time. As no sophisticated tools are needed, virtually everyone with a microscope can examine and study Demodex mites."

Face mites are ubiquitous and easy to collect, but almost no one's researching them! So a few months ago a paper came out explaining exactly how to collect and observe them in the lab. Paper: Sci-Hub 🏴‍☠️ :

There's two species of face mites that live on humans. They live in our hair follicles and sebaceous glands, respectively. They look kind of like tardigrades, but longer. (Photo source: )

Just like cats and rats (yes, rats), spiders are actually very tidy animals! Here, one of my tarantulas carefully cleans their legs and pedipalps. This species (Bumba cabocla) spends most of it's time burrowing, so seeing it is a treat!

Don't waste time with someone who isn't worth it. Vet potential partners by releasing spiders on them on the first date.

Another chunk of eight-legged bird poo for your viewing pleasure! Celaenia sp. "bird-dropping spider" (Araneidae) This individual might be a mature female of the same species I posted yesterday or a different species. There's at least 6 species in this genus in New Zealand.

Last week my girlfriend made me this birthday cake with edible shield-back trapdoor . The cake also had whiskey cream filling! Definitely a keeper (gf, not the cake... which has already been consumed in its entirety).
