Art challenge: No matter what you're drawing, put an invertebrate in it—no excuse. There's always room for at least 1 (one) invertebrate.

Press down on the mites to see better. To get the mites to swell up/shrink down, all you need is salt water!pic.twitter.com/Ger2Canq5F

If you want to keep the mites alive a bit longer, leave them in the follicular cast/sebum plug.pic.twitter.com/7iLT5P0Opq

2. Prepping mites for microscopy - use fine tweezers to put pore plug horizontally on microscope slide. Press thick plugs down with cover slip and/or immerse in oil for better visibility - use a fine hair or eyelash glued to a rod to get mites feet-side down

1. Extracting mites. You can use a blackhead remover (see pic), OR a peel-off mask or those pore strips if you want the whole follicle. These researchers made a version based on drugstore ones. "Virtually everyone with a microscope can examine and study Demodex mites."
There's also some other equipment involved but much of it is stuff the average person can get at the drugstore.pic.twitter.com/wroft9maGl

Face mites are ubiquitous and easy to collect, but almost no one's researching them! So a few months ago a paper came out explaining exactly how to collect and observe them in the lab. Paper: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10493-019-00450-9 … Sci-Hub

There's two species of face mites that live on humans. They live in our hair follicles and sebaceous glands, respectively. They look kind of like tardigrades, but longer. Just like cats and rats (yes, rats), spiders are actually very tidy animals! Here, one of my tarantulas carefully cleans their legs and pedipalps. This species (Bumba cabocla) spends most of it's time burrowing, so seeing it is a treat!

Don't waste time with someone who isn't worth it. Vet potential partners by releasing spiders on them on the first date.

Another chunk of eight-legged bird poo for your viewing pleasure! Celaenia sp.
