no-one with a shred of ethics will ask you this they might ask you what your expected compensation is, which you should also not answer with a serious number, but they won't try to anchor you to what you're earning rn

if ur getting recruited it's because ur hot shit, which means ur probably underpaid vs the current market go get that paper bb

I tweet all this as a mildly desperate hiring manager for gods sake ask for money, nothing's worse than someone quitting for a better offer because some recruiter fuckhead undercut my chance to pay them right

good thing nobody breaks the law
-
can't even imagine the chaos that would bring
-
it'd be like someone telling lies on the internet, too horrifying even to conceive of
-
I'm a recruiter, don't break the law and I am sorry you've had a poor experience with Recruiters in general.
-
I know there are good ones out there

I'm not sure that's true. I have people say "Holy shit. There's no way we can match that." And then nobody wastes anybody's time.
-
might happen on occasion, but it's still a question posed from a disingenuous position
-
more ethical way of getting to the same place is asking your expectations
-
Usually my expectation is I'm going to be paid 10-15% more than at current last gig and I've never had any problem saying what those numbers are. "I don't want to say what I'm getting paid now because I'm probably getting screwed" isn't a great look.
-
if you know enough about the job market, yeah, it isn't a problem - the issue is, most candidates don't

don't undersell urself m8 "less than I should be earning in this market, or I wouldn't be willing to talk" also jfc make them buy you coffee, if not lunch and booze they expense that shit
-
1) sure. 2) Oversimplified much? 90% of job seekers I know aren't looking *because* of their salary. 3) yeah if a recruiter isn't willing to meet you IRL *and* pick up *any* tab, they're not cognizant of their position.
-
I don't think job-seekers' actual intentions (probably quite complex and nuanced, as you say) are relevant when responding to recruiters asking shitty questions from a disingenuous foundation
