    The PJD had been continuously hampered by the palace, and operated in a context of authoritarian drift in Morocco, especially after 2015. But this level of defeat, amidst increased turnout, suggests more than electoral engineering by the regime (which is also there).

    Dramatic setback for Morocco’s Islamist PJD party, which had been the largest in parliament for the last decade, and is now in 8th place. It had 125 seats in the last parliament, preliminary results show it only won 12 in yesterday’s elections.
