I do not understand the logic of the graphs in this (NYT article shared with alarm) article at all. At best, they're uninformative, but at worst, wildly misleading. Percent share can increase a lot if the baseline is low, or if fewer adults get infected and can mean nothing. ???pic.twitter.com/X1UuOaMq0T

I find one of the challenges describing this pandemic is that any given stat has very limited value alone, need a lot of info to paint an accurate picture

Single studies and single stats range from not useful to misleading; but they drive a lot of media coverage and social media attention. But percent of cases that are kids is singularly worthless given percent can increase a lot depending on baseline etc.

the discussion of COVID in kids is weird because a) most of our data comes from times/places when schools were closed b) I'm less worried about kids being infected than who kids infect (and who they infect, and who they infect...)https://twitter.com/MDaware/status/1257029392846512137 …

Also. Schools for younger kids can have adult-to-adult transmission. What about masks & outdoor/ventilated school? Many countries with open schools are relaxing for younger kids. After 15 or so, we clearly see tick up in transmission risks. Lumping it all in a panic doesn't help.

Anyone who talks about COVID-19 in "children" and doesn't differentiate a 5 year old from a 15 year old isn't worth listening to for that exact reason

even the South Korean study (which had some of the best information available) only divided 0-9, 10-18 IIRC

Don't even get me started on arbitrary age binning Where are their statisticians helping them fit continuous regression models (with splines) TO SEE THE TREND I want to know: is it linear? Is it S shaped with a sharp rise in adolescence? No idea because of stupid 10y bins

Let’s hope our family will not be infected and if so, would be an interesting cluster of 10 people (4,5,10,14,15,16,23,24,42,43)😉 or even case study. 5 different schools in 1 Family. One teacher in Secondary and one in a profession with many adult contacts.

A harsh statement given the paucity of surveillance data on covid in kids. See our state report card and recommended minimum data table, which NO state is even close to achieving.http://www.covkidproject.org/state-report-card …

You’re highlighting the exact point surely? States not reporting age disaggregated data <18 are preventing essential knowledge about demographic distributions If you can’t report it, you can’t report it If you can, and you don’t, you’re not doing it right

And the risks to the education of kids who are 15 or 5 of distance learning are also very different (which we know with greater certainty).
