Kids can transmit #COVID19. Despite @DFTBubbles last week suggesting children are "immune" from spreading; it's just much less common and woefully understudied https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/05/health/coronavirus-children-transmission-school.html … by @apoorva_nyc w/ @BillHanage @JenniferNuzzo @c_drosten https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1257693489296359424 … and @mugecevikpic.twitter.com/ABCiKspXXr

Eric - can you highlight where we even came close to suggesting children were immune. This was a popular mis-reading by media but was hoping scientists would take time to read. A bit disappointed. We are minnows compared to your reach & feel this is an unfair translation.

Clearly children can transmit, just at a completely different rate than adults https://dontforgetthebubbles.com/the-missing-link-children-and-transmission-of-sars-cov-2/ … HT @apsmunropic.twitter.com/2hft3jAHiR

This is particularly frustrating given @EricTopol rightly raves over @mugecevik and her amazing thread - but it includes almost exactly the same papers and came to almost exactly the same conclusions as us! Would you be so kind as to set the record straight?

We of course believe children CAN transmit, its almost impossible to imagine otherwise The current evidence suggests their role in transmission almost certainly significantly lower than adults (as was the case with SARS - this shouldn’t be a surprise)

This is not how I interpret this document either. Children are not immune, but their role in transmission is likely low. @TessaRDavis @apsmunro @DFTBubbles have been synthesising the evidence about children. We should applaud their important contribution @EricTopol

I do indeed applaud their efforts, Muge. But I'd like to understand how their report was then used by the media last week to declare that children cannot transmit #COVID19. That is simply not true and unfortunate. It would be helpful for @DFTBubbles to explain the disconnect.

One journalist took a statement from the China/WHO mission quoted in our review, and stated "a study" found no evidence of transmission from children to adults, referencing us Every paper afterwards took the headline and ran it without checking the source, or checking with us

I personally went to great efforts to correct this through the media/science bureau in London and contacted the original journalist personally Most major news outlets issued a correction, on our request I issued a thread correction on twitter too! It was very stressful!

By respecting the anonymity, can you tell us what the journalist's response was? I'm very curious.

In the extract you highlighted it is clear we state there are still unknowns (sentence before blue) https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1257926678724046848 … We’ve have been linked to a statement we did not originally make ourselves. (if honest frustrated because you called us out rather than news outlets)

Thanks for your response, Damian. There are 2 reports on your site. The more recent one that you co-wrote is accurate. The prior one, used (& amplified by) the media to assert no children transmissibility, highlights lack of episodes. IMO, lack of study deserved far more emphasis pic.twitter.com/mt52UUNm47

Thanks, Alasdair. Now I understand what happened and shouldn't have attributed this misinformation to your work, but to its media coverage. As I wrote last evening, the subsequent @DFTBubbles report you and @Damian_Roland posted is exemplary https://dontforgetthebubbles.com/the-missing-link-children-and-transmission-of-sars-cov-2/ …pic.twitter.com/SE0K2ydMwn
