Too great a cost is being incurred by ON public and its teachers in the face of unethical government and bad-faith negotiations.

There’s a moment from Kobe’s final game that few people saw and nobody really remembers … but won’t ever forget it.

Morning question: Is subitizing to math what recognizing sight words is to reading? I suspect not exactly, but they seem related somehow.

Worth a read. But let’s remember there is much more to psychology and cognitive psychology than myths and memorization. Passionate teachers have always informed themselves — not to critically “re-think our approaches" but to deepen our professional knowledge and expertise.

For a long time, I thought I had to choose between art and science. My time in grad school has taught me there is SO much overlap! I also learned that I thrive at the intersection; doing both balances me out.

We have a theory. It's dynamical systems theory, and we are just waiting for the rest of the field to catch up.

A nice thread about issues with cognitive load theory and with responses. Some views from my side.

I encourage those who truly wish to learn to look into Critical Periods (CPs). They scaffold development. In the case of language acquisition, there's a sequence of several cascading periods, some CPs, others less rigid. They require "typical" experience, not enriched experience.

The has re-invigorated the nature-nurture debate (e.g. innate priors, learnability) on Twitter. I fear, though, that regressing to this dichotomy fails to acknowledge the self-organizing & pattern-forming nature of ontogeny. Here, I return to van Geert (2003)'s remarks:

The AI, ML, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science communities have much to learn from ethology and comparative psychology re: nature-nurture, a dichotomy eloquently refuted by Lehrman (1953):

I can't say this paper captures my own view of severe reading disability, but it is an interesting perspective and worth sharing.

This is a great example of how art activities help enhance student well-being and ensure that students are engaged in their learning. Please share an example of how you engage students in learning activities.

Students benefit when instruction supports them in making connections among representations. This work addresses a science concept -- but the general principle holds true for math, as well!
