Imagine being the coward that picks ranger and then hides off in the back spamming pitiful ranged weapons. A real ranger picks up a longsword, shield, builds up to a 19 AC with medium armor, and becomes the party tank + healer + dps

There are are so many cool ways to play other characters in DnD! The tanky ranger I'm playing right now is actually designed around BotW Link and his beast companion looks like wolf Link from twilight princess. 5e lets you do some super creative stuff it's amazing!!!
