In reality I approach in a back and forth way, dashing in and out while slowly getting closer and dancing around my opponent's attacks until I can get a hit. It's the idea of "one step back, two steps forward" so that you keep yourself from over-committing to your approach
Even if my opponent is holding back and spamming projectiles, as long as I can carefully make net forward movement without getting hit by shielding or out-maneuvering zoning tools I'll eventually be able to close the gap and take center stage to get some hits in
