When I was younger I often felt very overwhelmed by the number of different battles that need to be fought. Protecting the environment, advocating for migrants, dealing with homelessness, addictions and mental health support, access to justice etc etc etc.

And you have a lot of theoretical frameworks to choose from. None of them are going to be absolutely perfect, describing the world 100 % accurately, or offering guaranteed solutions. So you can't afford to be too dogmatic if you want to move beyond theory.

When we think about environmental crisis, for example, we must not fail to understand how migration is intensely linked to environment degradation, or how colonialism and neo-liberalism have exacerbated and even caused these environmental stresses.

So your response to environmental issues at some point will have to contend with how our governments are dealing with migration. Right now the most common response in the global North is to either openly or sneakily commit any and all human rights abuses in the name of borders.

What is your theory of change? When you campaign to save the rainforest, do you consider the fact of massive human displacement due to climate disaster? Are you even aware of what your governments are doing? Are you letting them pretend to be your ally on one issue...

while they actively commit human rights abuses that are directly related to that issue? You cannot allow anyone to convince you that you can be a single-issue activist. You don't have to "do all the things", focus your attention...but understand the relationships.

So yeah. Migrant issues are environmental issues. Environmental issues are gender issues. And so on.

We can't fool ourselves that we are going to escape the tipping point for global environmental disaster; we're past it. In addressing this we need to reevaluate nation states, borders, and how "human" we see "others" as.
