Type Ia supernova 2020ue, discovered by indomitable Koichi Itagaki, is now the brightest know supernova on the sky (~12.2 mag). ASAS-SN image (image subtraction-processed) from the last night on the left, image of the host galaxy (NGC 4636 in Virgo) on the right.

One more example of not giving an actual f... about astronomy: if they were serious, their test would have multiple satellites, with coatings of different properties. To repeat after muskbros: "how hard could it be?"

We've managed to keep a spaceship that was designed in 2001 and powered by a PlayStation 1 CPU running on the edge of the solar system, with regular software updates (last one last spring, next one in work), so I think you can keep a dumb speaker working for more than a decade.

The legal team for a billion dollar company calls in a TOS violation demanding you defund me- that's not a fight you want. Imagine the articles could write about if they'd said "maybe outing LGBT creators in authoritarian countries makes this not so cut-and-dry"?

And just be clear, for friends who haven't followed this: shitheads who are ostensibly her people, not MAGA hatters. Srsly, they decided for like a day that she must be a cis white GamerGater troll bc her author bio said she was born in 1988. Not making that up.

2020: the year that started in SF/F w a bunch of shitheads canceling a new and pretty good trans writer, purely out of spite and for the attention.

So why am I here? About two years ago a colleague sent me a spectrum and asked me if I had any idea what kind of object it was. It showed emission lines, but none that I knew. I suggested he send it to the another astronomer I know, who is great at recognizing weird objects.

Having a think about sperm whales this morning. Specifically, how they routinely make one of the most nightmarish journeys imaginable as part of the ordinary business of living.

this is not about "harassment"--it's about celebrities and pundits and political operatives being aghast that the great unwashed masses can *literally* talk back, and tell them about themselves it will ruin twitter, as we know it now

Brains are amazing. Our lab demonstrates that single human layer 2/3 neurons can compute the XOR operation. Never seen before in any neuron in any other species. Out now in . Congrats Albert, Tim  & CO

Upon further review by , AT 2019xis is even cooler -- it is a light echo of SN 1987A! Some of the light from the supernova from 1987 went a different direction, bounced off a gas cloud and go here almost 33 years late.

The first photo of M31, known at the time as the Andromeda Nebula, was taken by astronomer Isaac Roberts in 1888. The image, captured with his 20" reflector, revealed a clear spiral structure. But scientists assumed it was a gas cloud within our galaxy. Image: Isaac Roberts

A Ballard story. Astronomy retreated to remote places to avoid light pollution but was finally finished off by curtains of satellite junk. Kerans the last astronomer ranges the high deserts with a telescope mounted on the back of a KAMAZ-4911, looking for the golden window...

Sketch of Merope's tears in the Pleiades. One of the most beautiful views I have ever seen - the burning bright stars juxtaposed with the dusty blue gray nebulosity.

Real-time astrology is the way to go: - first, get your regular old-fashioned horoscope; - second, search TNS for any recent transients in your Zodiacal sign; - third and final, bang your head against the wall as many times as there were TNS matches!
