    There were so many takes and headlines like this. What if , et. al just said something like “a certain milieu” instead of generation? Doesn’t make for the best headline, but certainly a more accurate one.

    The class-based assumptions in the writing are staggering. From A1 lede: "Buying a Kate Spade bag was a coming-of-age ritual for a generation of Americans."

    Along these lines, am I the only one who still finds Carrie, at times, a bit, well...relatable (despite how unlikable/problematic she is)? So much revisionist hate for Carrie out there

    CARRIE BRADSHAW IS PROBLEMATIC. She had a narrow view of sexuality. She isn’t inclusive. She isn’t queer friendly. She picked the man baby to end up with. She is terrible with money. But my career probably wouldn’t exist without her. So I’m happy she appeared 20 years ago today.

    When I was in 3rd grade, the only persuading I did was to convince the teacher I'd cleaned my desk enough to earn a Jolly Rancher, but here we are.

    Daughter’s class is writing persuasive essays. She wants to convince the school to have ASL courses. So that in a lockdown situation, the teachers and students can communicate with each other and trap the shooter as well as not be killed. 3rd grade.

    I learned a ton *about* Tom Wolfe in j-school and grad school but -- and this is embarrassing -- don't think I've read a single one of his books. Where should I start?

    RIP to Tom Wolfe, who gave a generation of young writers wildly unrealistic expectations about how glamorous and lucrative a career in magazine journalism would be.

    Yeah, her tweet actually reads like an Onion headline. Ugh ugh ugh.

    Disgusting—those helming this “initiative” shouldn’t be able to sleep at night, but of course they’re not the ones suffering in precarity. Academia is fucked. And nothing will change until those with institutional clout meaningfully support those who are vulnerable.

    Like my mom always said, "If you don't have anything nice to say...drag it to a private 'Terrible' bookmarks folder."

    I have a bookmarks folder called “Terrible.” When I see a terrible article I’m tempted to drag on Twitter, I instead bookmark it in my folder. It makes me feel like my disgust has been registered.

    (Most weeks, being a freelance journalist can feel like everything is moving way too slow. Other weeks you have multiple stories in edits and publishing at once and you've still got to teach your classes and catch flights and eat. More experienced freelancers: IS THIS NORMAL?)

    Learned that I'm a bit out of practice when it comes to man-on-the-street from my newspaper days, but it was fun to turn to my daily newspaper roots with this type of story. Thanks, !
