I see this helping smart people of every race. MLK had a dream about this... that people would be judged by their merit not their race.

That is the ideal. The objective. but even Nixon knew better than to depend on its achievement. Secondly, no one makes it without someone else saying, yes, give them a shot. That's human nature. Must guard against undeniably deplorable history of discrimination.

A policy that 'takes a person's race into account' sounds racist to me, and I don't know how anyone could argue against that.

No it will not. If schools want to be diverse, they can do so without needing permission from the government. State schools, if they are to exist, should be admitting based on merit only. Private schools should admit based on whatever criteria they choose.
