The thing that critics of activists don’t get is that they tried playing the “polite language” policy game and all it did was make them easier to ignore. It wasn’t until they made folks uncomfortable that there was traction to do ANYTHING even if it wasn’t their full demands.
The whole point of protesting is to make ppl uncomfortable. Activists take that discomfort w/ the status quo & advocate for concrete policy changes. Popular support often starts small & grows. To folks who complain protest demands make others uncomfortable... that’s the point.
This mild discomfort people feel when witnessing protests is nothing compared to the life time of oppression people are protesting against.
.... the point of protest is make *change* change can make people uncomfortable, but making people uncomfortable in and of itself is NOT the point.
The word "defund" is not the best choice of word to use. People misconstrue that to mean "abolish" and that would be ludicrous.
Thats great but in the end it turns people against the change youre trying to make, turning off people permanently against the democratic platform and into the hands of the pro police brutality crowd.
Protesting is fine. Making people uncomfortable is fine. But if the slogan obscures the intent, then you’re not rallying people to your cause. You’re just making them uncomfortable. Then nothing gets done.
