I am following with concern the situation in Tonga. The @UN offices in the Pacific are closely monitoring the situation and are on standby to provide support if requested. I am grateful to countries that have already offered their support.

Without a more concerted effort from the international community, almost every man, woman and child in Afghanistan could face acute poverty. We need to act now to prevent economic and social collapse and find ways to prevent further the suffering of millions of Afghans.

My appeal to the parties: stop the fighting in all its forms. All people who need humanitarian aid must receive it as quickly as possible. It’s time to start dialogue and reconciliation.

As this week comes to an end, I remain heartbroken by the suffering of the Ethiopian people. I can testify that all Ethiopians have always been exemplary in their generosity and hospitality towards refugees. Ethiopians deserve peace.

The Group of 77 & China play a critical role in keeping the views, concerns & ideas of the developing world at the centre of the @UN’s decisions. I commend Guinea for its leadership of the G77 & China last year & congratulate Pakistan which will chair the Group in 2022.

Net zero cannot be a public relations exercise. We need impact. And we need accountability. That means ending high-carbon investments and fossil fuel financing & delivering time-based & measurable plans that prioritize emission reductions.

The 1.5°C global heating goal is receding, not getting closer. We must accelerate the energy transition in emerging economies—particularly those dependent on coal. That's why I'm calling for targeted coal phase-out coalitions & a just transition from fossil fuels.

Across Afghanistan, women and girls are missing from offices and classrooms. No country can thrive while denying the rights of half its population. The women and girls of Afghanistan must have access to all education & employment opportunities and health care services.

12 years ago, a devastating earthquake claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in Haiti, including 102 members of the @UN family. Today and every day, we remember the victims & honour their legacy through our work. They will never be forgotten.

The pandemic has deeply affected us all but its impact on young people has been especially heartbreaking. As leaders and policymakers work on our recovery, I urge them to look to young people. Their needs must come first in all policy & investment discussions.

I strongly condemn the appalling attacks perpetrated over the weekend in Nigeria’s Zamfara State in which many civilians were killed. I urge the Nigerian authorities to spare no effort in bringing those responsible for these heinous crimes to justice.

I'm deeply saddened by the lives lost in the apartment building fire in the Bronx on Sunday. My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragedy, and with our host city New York.

I welcome today’s release from prison in Ethiopia of numerous detainees including key opposition figures. I will remain actively engaged in assisting Ethiopia to bring an end to the fighting and to restore peace and stability. https://bit.ly/3f4FjA1
