As for the cost argument, go check what a base Chevy Bolt or Tesla 3 costs. EVs aren’t exactly luxury vehicles anymore.

My guess is that EVs with enough range are expensive compared to a Prius C which already gets 48mpg. One driver told me he worked 14-16 hour days (as he lived a long way from SF) switching between Lyft and Uber as he timed out of a particular service.

Tesla does not permit ride hailing drivers to use Superchargers. That is why you see taxi companies in NYC and London switch to EVs and set up their own charging infrastructure. Ride hailing is trailing. For now. It’ll happen. Just needs more cheap EVs and more fast chargers.

More L2 chargers in apartment buildings will probably be a huge boost for EV ride hailing too because that’s where drivers live and will do most of their charging, esp in the absence of fast charging infrastructure. Need more incentives for apartment buildings to install them!

Wouldn’t they have to plan more carefully to be near a supercharger?

1. you need to buy the car first, so not an option for the precariat 2. you need safety net if something goes wrong (not a Tesla forte) 3. you wait; the Germans will dominate the fleet business as it arises: they will deliver the requisite quality

Supercharging is close to the cost of gas, surprisingly. Only roughly 10% cheaper in California. Supercharging is not intended to be used every day.
