Like any other useful tool, it’s prone to being misused. Precautionary principle made a ton of sense at the beginning of the pandemic when we only knew that it was dangerous and very contagious, and we had very limited ability to test for it. Much less so with a vaccine.

The key difference being that an uncontrolled contagion scales quickly and has tons of externalities, while a vaccine is controlled and can be doled out carefully in a risk-managed way (e.g., to people who aren’t in the high-risk demographic for blood clots)

In the meantime we have psychoanalysis. Learning to let go of old models that served us well in old situations, to consciously walk forward toward a goal we are not promised with full awareness of our vulnerability and mortality. As it is for us individually, it is for us all.
