It doesn’t help that most Americans’ worldview doesn’t extend further than WWII, for the most part. Insofar as accessible symbols, signs, examples, and political movements usable in discourse go. The exceptional period is the cultural baseline, to much confusion.
E.g. all this blabbering, pearl-clutching drama around Substack, a concept that would have been instantly understood by Ben Franklin, by scribblers with some ad-supported Woodward/Bernstein hero narrative stuck in their heads.
