You can’t will someone who was raised upper middle class into accepting lower class conditions with a smile. It’s just not happening. That’s not how people work, no one wants to be downwardly mobile.

If a prefab home on $5,000 land in a small town with a single big box store and no hospital is enough for you that’s great and it’s a lifestyle I myself personally enjoy as well. Most born and bred suburbanites won’t. Part of it is there’s no work. It’s culture too, though.

I’d bet they’d go for it, if marketed well and framed to be IG-worthy (e.g. those twee “tiny homes”).

This is good example that proves my point. Again, it's social status and fitting in that makes people want such lavish lifestyles. Most would genuinely be okay with less, but they are deeply worried about who others would perceive them if they did.
