Read Mila 18 when I was in high school. Had a huge impact on me.
I went to 18 Mila street in Warsaw in the mid-90s, and was somewhat disappointed to find an unremarkable modern apartment building. There were almost no traces or memorials to the uprising. I imagine this has changed.
You can go to the Cafe Sperl in Vienna, walk outside, see no sign, but see the bullet holes in the wall where they shot the resistance to the Nazis. One minute, an elegant Viennese morning. The next... The past didn't go anywhere.
