Feels like much more energy around religious Easter and Passover this year. It’s not my culture, and I’m just an observer, but religious signaling may outcompete politics-as-ersatz-religion. Rather than figuring out ethics anew with every tweet, use a millennia-old moral code.

In the West, the ✝️ and ✡️ may make a comeback in public life. People want to know what a “good person” should do, and these symbols are more enduring than any political party or media corporation. Interested in thoughts by @AriLamm @KTmBoyle @micsolana @NellieBowles @antoniogm

My prediction: This is just a late pandemic fad and not a sustainable trend. For better or worse, religion has to compete with alternatives that are more believable and more fun.

Many recent social movements have many of the characteristics of religion but are more believable, and you can participate in them without having to attend church, which many find boring. Churchgoing also has to compete with video games, surfing the internet, etc.

I actually think we’ve seen recent social movements promulgate claims that are just as unbelievable and demanding as those of traditional religion — but purely to justify their power, and without the surrounding practices of forgiveness, community, ritual.

Perhaps the only choice is between bad religion and good religion; no religion isn't actually a viable choice for a real-world society.

Much like the solution to bad science is good science, not no science, the solution to bad religion is good religion, not no religion.

Why isn't "no religion" a choice? Like, why can't it occur or won't it work?

i see a close relation between religion and culture... still not sure why it needs to exist... in Europe non religious is prominent (France 40%, Czech 37%, etc...)

I doubted that for years, but the last decade has convinced me that is correct. Religion is the way society battles over its values while maintaining cohesion.
