Our country is largely incapable of deriving secular meaning (such as Medicare for All, or improved living standards for people) on its own. So this is no surprise.

Americans have always preferred religious sentiment to the religious institutions. It's a nation of tent revivals and witch hunts, not cathedrals and organized processions. Europeans are the opposite.
