This is 100% the fault of the VC providers. Your mute status is still, a year into the pandemic, crazy subtle in the UI. It should be a huge red overlay on your entire self camera view, if not literally the entire frame of the call.
Product counter-point: The upside of easier unmuting when you want to speak has to be counter-balanced against mistakenly unmuting when you *don't* want to be. Just consider how that nets out, particularly with everyone at home.

100%. that's why i'm focused on status, not the toggle. i should immediately, with no cognitive overhead, *know* if i'm muted or not.
