You forgot to mention billions of dollars of ad spend and the almost total inability to impose electoral law (obviously that only matters in counties with electoral law)
-
And by forgot you mean wrote an entire piece on it, which is linked.

Brilliant piece! By far the best thing I've read on the subject. Really sorry to have missed it at the time. I wish more people here in the UK, most notably
@carolecadwalla covered the issue in that way.

What bugs me about FB’s News Feed is it can’t be turned off. Take some $$ from me every month, in return kill the crap. I’d use it more if this were an option. As it is I have 4 “friends” (UK cousins), follow no-one & switch away from the Timeline as soon as the FB app loads.

Pesky plebs. If only we had an organization that could confidently separate fact from fiction. We could call it I dunno, how 'bout "The Ministry of Truth?"

Algorithms play a critical role in the amplification of messages through the network. They might not be the match, but are certainly one of the accelerants. That said, their optimization for engagement introduces more negative externalities than any encoded political biases.

This was my macro take from over a year ago. Still stand by the general thesis:https://link.medium.com/yrWwm4MPJR
