Eventually we'll all internalize that startups (and the behemoths they occasionally become) are run by clinical sociopaths driven by a demonic and tireless will to power, rather than accord them the establishment respectability our uber-capitalist society tends to dole out.https://twitter.com/WillOremus/status/1060897341090226177 …

I know I'm late to this, but the reason Amazon's HQ2 was a farce is not just that they picked two cities. It's that they raised the hopes of cities across the country that could really use an infusion of economic vitality, then picked the two that need it least of all.

Alternative take: system doesn't care the motives, pathologies behind building. Just amplifies creative destruction to maximize change+wealth. True winners --pensions, endowments, inst'ns that do good-- spew returns broadly. Add taxes + rich people dying and voila, civilization.

Right. Except that much of that great wealth is *not* taxed. And the wealthy would cheat death medically if they could (which, who knows, they may be able to one day).

The world you describe is one of Benthamesque utilitarianism, which is more or less our default moral principle these days; the bean-counters have defeated the priests and rabbis. But such a world could include all sorts of evils along with it. Ours already does.

It seems more reasonable to design society function well in the presence various moral strategies as opposed to assuming everyone will be successful at living stoically or deontologically. If the shock absorbers need maintenance let's fix them.
