We've gone from religion being the opiate of the masses, to politics being their Adderall instead. Secular liberal democracy had better come up with a substitute for religion if it wants to last.

I suspect psychedelics will be legalized soon, in fact, just for this reason.

Service, ie, work for the good of others, may be one of the few remedies — whether volunteering with kids’ education, working in shelters, or cleaning up the streets. Naval gazing your own political plight gonna lead to insanity. (Preaching to myself as much as anyone here)

Right. Secular humanism is a weak glue to do that. And sure, some very educated and cerebral people can will themselves into a godless categorial imperative, and the modern liberal state depends on a low level of this for progressive taxation, but still seems somewhat weak sauce.

There have been a lot of good national discussions on the trend of US disengagement with social institutions: Church, societies, clubs, sporting leaguges (Bowling Alone), etc. Have you followed any of it?

Oh yeah. Probably read most of them. I agree with all of them. However, everyone diagnoses but doesn't leave a prescription or treatment plan. Other than maybe calling on us to embrace former values. Fair enough, but not sure that'll work for most.

This is the second post like this I've seen in two days. I have to ask: why do people imagine that there can be a "substitute for religion" that is not itself a religion?

Having hundreds of people explaining to me on Twitter that everything from sex to nature to beauty is "political" makes me realise that Western civilisation really hasn't come up with a viable alternative to religion, yet. Until we do, politics will be the opiate of the masses.

Or, maybe find a way to be inclusive of those who are religious? I identify with liberal politics, but it’s difficult for me to engage with those I politically identify when they shame me for my faith.

the problems really started when conservatives politicized religion back in the 60's. used to be that religious folk viewed politics as dirty, corrupt, etc. and stayed out of it.
