"Everyone please just STFU." -@jason_pontin Hard to disagree. Beyond that, this piece still leaves me convinced there's no way to make free speech, viral reach via ubiquitous smartphone adoption, and democracy compatible. All discussion seems to merely relabel the elements.https://twitter.com/jason_pontin/status/1059802015612702721 …

Writing in @WIRED Ideas, I gingerly make the case for less speech - literally, less - because “social media are doomsday machines.” https://www.wired.com/story/ideas-jason-pontin-less-speech/ …

The general pessimism in this article seems entirely unsound. Absurdly, obviously, false. I think his mistake, like many, is that he has mistaken his own beliefs for the best beliefs.

I myself am not ready to abandon free speech. Values are precisely those things you're willing to sacrifice something for. Shootings are bad, but squelching free speech is still worse IMO.

I agree, but I just don't think things are bad in the first place. Given the increase in communications capacity (and political discourse) over the last twenty years or so, political shootings and such haven't seemed to increase proportionately.

Right. They're not that bad. The 60s were way worse. Nobody proposed changing 1A fundamentally then. What's really happened is that we've become a soft and wealthy society that values security over freedom. That's the real change.

I wouldn't disagree, though I'm nervous about putting my finger on one thing.
