I myself am not ready to abandon free speech. Values are precisely those things you're willing to sacrifice something for. Shootings are bad, but squelching free speech is still worse IMO.

I agree, but I just don't think things are bad in the first place. Given the increase in communications capacity (and political discourse) over the last twenty years or so, political shootings and such haven't seemed to increase proportionately.

Right. They're not that bad. The 60s were way worse. Nobody proposed changing 1A fundamentally then. What's really happened is that we've become a soft and wealthy society that values security over freedom. That's the real change.
