Reading John Gray's excellent book cataloging the various 'atheisms'. Quite the antidote to the New Atheism, and highlights the surprising ways secular humanism originated in religion (though it would claim otherwise). Anything else?https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/apr/15/seven-types-of-atheism-john-gray-review-richard-harries …

Sounds pretty Schmittian
@wupton -
Definitely Schmittian. Our institutions and political culture are mapped entirely onto the structures of Western theology.
-
Which Schmitt is this?
-
Carl Schmitt.
-
He’s noted for saying that all modern political concepts are secularized theological concepts. Fairly influential with the Straussians and also Frankfurt School. Also a Nazi. But so was Heidegger.

Dadgumit, This was supposed to be a magazine commission, not a PhD thesis. My reading pile is now a couple feet tall.

I think it might end up recycled as a chapter in book two anyhow, so I'll take on the reading list. Like the Israelites, looks like Moses took too long dilly-dallying on the mountain, and we've forged our own golden calf, mostly out of boredom.

@Vermeullarmine’s Liturgy of Liberalism in@firstthingsmag is very good: https://www.firstthings.com/article/2017/01/liturgy-of-liberalism …. Mary Eberstadt’s “The Zealous Faith of Secularism” is also very good. https://www.firstthings.com/article/2018/01/the-zealous-faith-of-secularism …@harari_yuval also makes a similar point in Homo Deus regarding “secular” Humanism. -
Excellent pointers. Thanks!

John Gray pretty much literally wrote the book(s) on secular humanism unwittingly smuggling Christian concepts into its program.
-
Yeah, just posted about reading his new book. It's really good. Wonder what a Sam Harris would say about it.

@erikdamato -- as Erik points out, the analogy is better as a monastery (not cult per se).https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/academia-is-a-cult/2018/10/31/eea787a0-bd08-11e8-b7d2-0773aa1e33da_story.html?fbclid=IwAR0ZPIjwhfd3xkr-MFYfIp5y4TZ1wkGe5qRpL0vATdoiPeFRFNL_KbAFm5k&utm_term=.4b861d0ab88e …Thanks.
