If Facebook's Newsfeed, user data collection, and targeted advertising are so dangerous to democratic societies, how does a Facebook product like WhatsApp, which lacks all of those, have such impact on elections?

The real danger to democratic societies is unfettered free speech enabled by social media.

That's sadly correct. And there's really nothing FB or anyone can do about it, other than to squelch free speech or remove social aspects of the media. Free speech, social media, democracy: choose two.
