Watching GenZ/Millennials play an old Trivial Pursuit deck in a bar is a source of unending amusement. "Where is the Sea of Tranquility?" "Vietnam!" "Thailand!"

I'm old enough to remember a time when if you wanted to know about a thing, you either found someone who did, or found a book about it, both of which could be rare. Entire jobs--teacher, mechanic, scholar/experts of various flavors--existed only because Wiki and YouTube didn't

idk man, bar trivia is pretty popular among my peers

Ok. This is an interesting question. Because a number of bars whose stickers I've put on my laptop do it, and I'm not sure if it's just a cynical ploy to drive more business on Tuesday or what. And the few times I go, it seems cheating is rampant (the hidden phone....).

I’m sure from the bar’s view it’s all about the Tuesday business bump, but that only works if trivia is appealing enough to draw business (I myself do not cheat and would be legit scandalized if I caught someone doing so)

I see you typed "interesting" when you meant "terrifying".

Eh, I feel like my lack of facts makes my arguments better. I’m never arguing from a false premise because my memory sucks

Two 4th-graders overheard about 10 years ago: Q-Who was the first man on the moon? A-That’s easy. Louis Armstrong. (I cringed, but was also kinda...impressed?)

You know the answer, unfortunately. “Without memory, there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future.” It’s not just about what is searchable and retrievable. It’s about what facts occupy a person or a group of people.

I think knowledge is still essential. For a start, you need to know enough to know what you don't know, to know what to look for and to be able to assess the info you do find. The idea you can just teach critical thinking is misguided in the extreme.

I disagree. Facts make the world around you resonate with meaning. Without facts you'd be like an Eskimo who's never learnt the many works for snow: your world would be an undifferentiated & meaningless white desert

Why is trivia pointless in in age of Google? Just because an answer is easily accessible doesn’t make the game any less worthwhile.

I would be interested in knowing what is the modern version of trivial knowledge then? Knowing how to drive?
