How did Americans get so frightened of everything? When I came of age, the country was locked in a titanic struggle against a formidable enemy which presented an existential threat and had captured the family's homeland. Yet I don't recall anyone being as hysterical as now.

No, it really wasn't. Like all hysteria, it fed on itself. Later, we found the Russians had nowhere near the arsenal we thought they did.
