How did Americans get so frightened of everything? When I came of age, the country was locked in a titanic struggle against a formidable enemy which presented an existential threat and had captured the family's homeland. Yet I don't recall anyone being as hysterical as now.

Baby boomers have had every thing they ever wanted. Now they are getting old and facing their mortality. Panicked and angry that the universe is no longer catering to every whim.

I don't know what other generations have been like, but I can't imagine a group so hellbent on preserving for themselves what they were given by past generations while actively trying to deny it to future generations. I always thought the idea was for your kids to have it better.

It seems more "in order for my kids to do better, other kids have to be brought down". Hard to explain in one tweet, sorry.

If what we're seeing is, "wanting better for your kids," it is the weirdest way of doing it I can imagine.

this is a weird take. you don’t build the entirety of the us nuclear arsenal without hysteria on a civilizational scale.

No, it really wasn't. Like all hysteria, it fed on itself. Later, we found the Russians had nowhere near the arsenal we thought they did.

Technology. When you were born all you had was a newspaper and the evening news read by a calm centrist. Today, people are worked up by bloggers posing as journalists whose paycheck depends on outrage and can reach people in their pockets 24/7

Social media + blogs is an explosive combination. Then again printing press & alphabetisation gave us communism.
