The more classics you read, whether Latin, Greek, or Hebrew, the more you realize humans learn almost nothing--other than in cumulative fields like science and technology--and that most of history is tiresome repetition.

@sapinker makes a strong case that general levels of civility have increased: despite violence not going to zero, London circa 1600s was probably more depraved than Raqqa 2016. So maybe we learnt something on that front too - 1 more reply
