Much of tech journalism nowadays boils down to horses writing car reviews.

How's it pay?

I don’t mean to make light of this. Journalism is in crisis now, and only a few corps own it all. Not good.
-
Right. Despite the snark, I say this somewhat lovingly. Journalism needs to exist. But if the reaction to losing their monopoly on information distribution is harrumphing about the past, well, not doing anyone a service.
-
Kind of agree with you, in the sense that “journalism” has lost a lot of its control over the narrative in many areas; and I think that can be a good thing. The problem is, who is there 2be alternative journalists. As u may know, I’m not for the libertarian view on jobs/econ.

The narrative around startups when I was a journo was certainly fawningish, not to mention books like the facebook effect etc.

Problem is most in the Ai community are trying their best to make prototypes that can be sold to the highest bidder. Saw one famous Ai expert sellout to Uber recently- great way to put tech in wrong hands. Ai is the gold rush of the 21st century.
-
I should add it’s not really anywhere at the scale of the good rush. It’s more like 1 or 2 thousand people and a few companies; a rather tiny number.
