I get the realities of conservation when predatory species are lacking, and I've hunted and fished for food in the past and would do so again. But posing for a selfie in front off some magnificent creature you offed from 100 yards away with a rifle looks so incredibly lame.

Are you sympathetic to sanctioned trophy hunting, in which extremely limited licenses are auctioned off and the proceeds are reinvested?
-
I'm leaving my limited area of experience here, but it seems there is a debate around using limited hunting to fund conservation, per your suggestion. I don't know enough to say at an ecosystem level what's best, but I do know I won't respect someone who pursues it, though legal.
-
Exactly my thoughts on the matter

Oh wait shit, my online meme community and a tech dude who's book I admire are arguing on twitter??? Truly a small world.
-
As a matter of fact we’re agreeing!

It's apparently possible on this hellsite, though rare.

There is something distinctly disgusting about helicopter and car hunting. It completely upsets the human idea of fair play that some moron should be flown out to kill a predator at 100 yards and be back in a hotel bed by night.
-
That's not 'fair chase' by any definition of sportsmanship.
-
Hunting and killing something you tracked for five days in the cold has a certain romanticism that almost justifies the entire enterprise even if its unnecessary.

What hunting do you think is not stupid?

Eating the thing.

Beautiful response! I agree :)

Well, I dunno. There is something masculine about going into the dark continent with a breech-loading single-shot rifle to take down an elephant. With a high-powered semi-automatic sniper? Not really.

Some of it does, not the whole thing. Some murderous gleeful craven trophy hunts feed local people (or the hunter), enrich the local community, and preserve the overall species. Focusing on the one part you don’t like the looks of is pretty weak.

It’s a desire to control and possess - it’s offensive but sociologically interesting.

This one made my blood boil https://mobile.twitter.com/yashar/status/1053052215395418113/video/1 … (Don't know the background context though on if conservation driven)
