This started when I noticed a cross hanging from the rearview, but the turban and 'kara' indicated he was Sikh. Apparently, he kept the cross from a previous owner, which started the religion talk. "What's the difference between Baptists and the Catholics?", and off we went.

It's interesting to try and convey the nuances of a vast topic (that you yourself only vaguely grasp now) to someone with just enough knowledge to get the basics, but still viewing things from outside. This business of Jesus being divine was a subject of lots of follow-ups.

His final question, as we pulled over: "So what are you then? Catholic or Jewish?" (I'd explained the issue of the Jewish kids, and thoughts of conversion.) "Remember the thing about Jesus' divinity? Well, you've kind of got to give that up along with the bacon."

I was blowing my own mind with it, because I was trying to remember how the Holy Spirit, this tenuous concept, fit into it and got its own co-equal share of the divine cap table. Fortunately, he didn't dig for details, I think he found it all very fanciful.

Not to be in any way blasphemous, but this reminds me of a visit by a very early post-Soviet delegation who were being shown marketing and advertising. The head of delegation said to me 'this all seems rather artificial' and I said you mean like Agitprop and he said yea!

The Sikh religion is only 500 or so years old. Give it another thousand years and they'll get their schisms and breakaway groups as well.
