The biggest casualty of our entire discourse now taking place in prescriptive, exhortatory mode--other than ennobling every dim cretin online with a cause--is that it makes thinking about thinking impossible, which is where intellectual life really lives.

Empathy (in its original formulation, rather than the current sappy one) is seeing the world from another's eyes without necessarily embracing the view. Understanding is entertaining ideas without necessarily agreeing with them. That's all gone now.

Empathy doesn't necessarily lead to sympathy. It might inspire contempt when the other's POV is fully grasped. But what's common now is contempt due to cluelessness: neither side really understands the other, thus the focus on delegitimizing rather than debunking beliefs.

As much as I love text/loathe video, I think there's something with esp. short form text as a medium that inculcates a snarky/aloof dynamic, such that people who *could* think or empathize instead feel drawn to the easy dopamine of in-group dynamics (either reading or writing).

I need to flesh out this idea, but it's related to rage-mobs and memes while being something more. It's more personal and internal. The individual writing a status update or tweet, and her reader, are being trained to appreciate a necessarily caricatured idea.

Dude, it's not symmetric, you can't talk about our politics in the abstract when there is a know-nothing element with control of every government body. "Build the wall" and "lock her up" are not substantive policy positions that people can have intelligent debates about.
