        According to my Italian American ancestors, never eat mushrooms growing in pine needles, and those sure like pine needles to me.

        Mushroom knowledge is dangerous to transfer geographically. Of two similar-looking species that grow in different climates, one can be delicious and the other delicious and poisonous.

        That's a Lactarius species. The milky "latex" from broken gills is a giveaway. Someone else here says possible Russula -- like Russula, large Lactarius spp. often have chalky fragile stems, but the latex is pretty much the definition of Lactarius genus.

        Get with @DavidWolfe. Mushroom is his middle name. Also check out the Hamilton's Pharmacopoeia Viceland episode about Mushrooms. THere is also an annual mushroom festival in Telluride every year. Be there be present be breezy
