What's in DC? Is it worth visiting? I haven't been there since high school, and have the opportunity to fly and stay on someone else's dime. Not really into the tourist thing. I'm not hugely tempted, but am open to being convinced.

Surprised I had to scroll so far to see the first museum recommendation. All the Smithsonians are remarkable, but the Natural History one will change your view of the world (it's like strolling through Sapiens). American History will either placate or amplify your worries.

Also, underappreciated fact: Leonardo da Vinci's only painting in the Americas is in DC. "Ginevra de’ Benci" is at the National Gallery of Art. You can see what is believed to be his left thumb print above her left shoulder, where he used it to paint a tree.
