Put another way: pacifism as a social strategy is great....until you run into your first non-pacifist. The reality is that pacifism is a hypocritical philosophy: someone else always dies to defend it.

That's the fundamental problem with libertarianism.

Most libertarians I know own enough guns to arm an army platoon.

Sure -- but when the barbarians Huns show up -- do the same libertarians come out in force like an actual army would?

Sure. Fighting to be left alone isn’t just a rhetorical gag.

Maybe - but I doubt it.

Time to run what I call The Red Dawn Test: If a foreign nation were to invade and occupy parts of the US, who among your friends (or national political factions) would cave to the new masters, and who would take to the mountains with stolen weapons and fight as partisans?

Well, as coincidence would have it -- my Dad, 62 years ago to yesterday, did exactly the latter. I don't if I would have the cojones or be as crazy as to do the same today.

Just like people who are too wealthy and fat and happy can't be properly Catholic, I suspect the same is true of becoming a partisan.

Having kids seems to be a pretty bright line too.

I imagine that could go either way. Depends what happens to my kids in either situation. Many an invading army ran up against the hard wall of a man defending his family.

Both sets of my grandparents had to deal with this as a practical matter: the Germany Army occupation in 1944 & Red Army occupation in 1945. Impossible for one or even many men to defend their families against either. Had to cope, adjust and pray for the best.
