      If we avoid an actual civil war, it may well be because most military age US males can't run a mile and then shoot an AR accurately. Or have drug or criminal problems that bar them from service. Plus, there's a new Netflix special on. This is fine.https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/19/pentagon-buildup-troop-recruiting-shortage-351365 …

          bread and circuses --> pacifism

          It's all great until the barbarian Huns show up. And then you've got to either pay them off, or find other barbarians to defend yourself with, and then it all falls apart when they realize there's nothing keeping them from just taking what they like.

          Also, what I think might be a bigger driver of pacifism in the West is an aging population. The young want to prove themselves, and the slightly older want to protect their young families. But the elderly? They just want a quiet life, and aren't going to risk that for anything.

          Put another way: pacifism as a social strategy is great....until you run into your first non-pacifist. The reality is that pacifism is a hypocritical philosophy: someone else always dies to defend it.

          That's the fundamental problem with libertarianism.

          Most libertarians I know own enough guns to arm an army platoon.

          Sure -- but when the barbarians Huns show up -- do the same libertarians come out in force like an actual army would?

          I don’t know how emergency mobilization would work, but during the Viet Nam era, 8 weeks of training was imposed on draftees, with another 8 weeks for those selected as Infantry. Physical conditioning and weapons handling emphasized.

          Right. I'm not even remotely an expert, but seems the exigences of a professional army that can pick and choose, and that of a conscript army that must do something with everything thrown at it are rather different.

          I’m just relating my own experience in 1966. I was drafted, but then enlisted to get a better job. Still went through basic and Infantry training and it nearly killed me. Fortunately, Signal Corps duty was not strenuous.

          Yup. Bum knee here. I haven't been able to do any more running than the "White person jog" across intersections since 2016. /And I end up regretting that life choice.

          I think I might have passed a Marine PT test in the final year of high school, after four years of competitive crew had me thin as a rail and ready for hours of physical abuse. And not once since then.

          Of course, that is rather the point of boot camp. I did some outdoor work back in 2009 and lost 40 pounds in 4 months while eating 3-4000 calories a day. Pre-bum-knee me.... It's possible. Post-knee? Nope. No way.
