  4. How to become an art collector: 1. Be gifted a 'Chaos Monkeys'-themed work by a noted Cuban graffiti artist. 2. Carefully strap the work to car roof for transport. 3. Have the frame obliterate itself in the slipstream, rendering art into a twisted mess of wood and canvas.

  5. This is exactly the sort of "what we're about" marketing that Facebook was always incapable of. Somewhat oddly, as their internal belief in the mission was real and palpable.

  6. This is brand marketing done right. Google Photos is one of the indispensable products in my life. I have an album that auto-tags photos of my daughter, and exists as a lifelong photo gallery of her (spare me the facial recognition hysteria).

  9. It's counter-intuitive, but the rationalist literary and intellectual culture that followed printing and the Enlightenment (before our current nosedive into identity tribalism) was better at understanding other times and peoples than we are now. Logic and linearity go a long way.

  10. 'Orthodox' Judaism as a construct didn't emerge until the early 19th-cent. To suppose that the Orthodox wrote the Talmud(s) is anachronistic and absurd. But so is projecting modern categories and moralities on the past. And yet that's the only historical conversation going on.

  11. One of the casualties of our intellectual discourse reverting to a tribal-oral rhetoric of simplistic morality plays and myopic crusading is the power of empathy. The oral-tribalist can't see the world but through the lens of their own folklore and hangups.

  15. I'll never understand (or respect) people who choose to stay in the stands and talk smack vs. play in the field (even if given the opportunity). What sort of passive, cowardly character does it take? How do you not get bored there? How do you even dare to boo?

  18. Journalists used to provide distribution, so they were pandered to. Now they simply provide distortion, so they're ignored. To the formerly pandered, indifference feels like defensiveness, when it's merely the ingratiating mask falling off.
