Using simple linear models as building blocks, we are able to segment complex dynamics into interpretable segments. From brain to behavior, we find near-critical dynamics and show evidence of its modulation.

    - "Capturing the Continuous Complexity of Behavior in C. elegans" with Ahamed and Costa is a great paper, thanks for your talk at Georgia Tech about this work.

This is a very illuminating illustration of the ideas of phase space, predictability, and chaos. Looking at locomotory dynamics of C. elegans from this lens taught us a lot about worm behavior; detailed here . Follow for more dynamics.

Lyapunov exponents for the dynamics of locomotion in C. elegans. Periodic orbits, chaos, and nearly symplectic symmetry. Lots to explore here!

A behavioral state space, deterministic variability, and more still to come in C. elegans and beyond. A pleasure to work with this accomplished pair

And the prize for the oldest reference so far, too! Who knew Maxwell studied spherical aberration in fish lenses as far back as 1854?

0/Here’s a summary of a recently published work on phase space geometry of spiking nets. It’s a project that shows its age by its weight in technical detail, but there are pretty (and accurate!) pictures for those wanting to skim.

    C. elegans has a well-known 302 neuron connectome... but the electrical connections are DIFFERENT in animals that have experience starvation (dauer). And this leads to differences in their behavior! [by Battacharya in Hobert lab]

Coupling matrices that are quite dissimilar according to Euclidean distance can result in the same locally linearized dynamics. One of several important statements in this paper!
