Expressionist architecture was really something else. The church of Hallgrimur in Reykjavik took 41 years to build and is supposed to resemble rocks, mountains and glaciers — rendered in concrete blocks. There’s something impressive and foreboding about it and I am in awe.

Today it took me four tries to get a unit test to pass. It was an assert true. How was your Friday?

Self-care and proper rest is really important. As put it, “We sacrifice sleep in the name of productivity, but ironically our loss of sleep, despite the extra hours we spend at work, adds up to 11 days of lost productivity per year per worker, or about $2,280.” Ouch.

Y’all should totally invest more in improving your observability. It isn’t only good for keeping systems healthy, it’s great for keeping them secure.

This is interesting as conventional wisdom is "attract the best people" & maybe sack the toxic people. It's seems far more time and cost efficient to attract *friendly* people & to nudge toxic employees to behave. Then maybe some top-1% unicorns will come. Culture matters!

Minor & Housman's 2015 study suggests attracting the top 25% of high-performers contributes $2K in efficiency gains over other employees versus toxic employees *costing* upwards of $12K through factors like reduced morale — not including costs of turnover and reputational damage.

Since we know that workshops, focus groups and brand managers can genuinely alter public opinion, is it time to admit and acknowledge that we don’t live in a democracy anymore?

Are you also a fan of Github Pages? It’s elegantly simple to use unlike many other tools — Netlify’s pricing model for individuals is a real headscratcher and nobody else came close, so here’s how I achieved the same thing for Gatsby using Github Actions:

Last year we started using graphQL in my team to help us migrate away from over a decade of legacy, and wrote up a few reflections on the approach here:
