This is exactly why you need independent media monitoring the Kem Sokha trial. The prosecution, on multiple occasions, asked for a linguistic expert to “explain” Kem Sokha’s words, with the endorsement of govt lawyers. Kem Sokha said no one else should explain his own words.

Garment association GMAC takes on global brands, who issued a letter calling for reforms in the labour sector. They do know that the brands place the orders, right? Also, a little rich of them to use “our workers.”

Kem Sokha Day 3: Court played the 2-minute and 1-hour clips of the alleged “treason video.” The shorter video was published using two short sections of longer video, with a few words cut out. Prosecution/Govt says words are 99% same. Defense says context is lost in edits.

Govt lawyer Ky Tech said the nine countries he had mentioned as linked to the case on Wednesday did not necessarily commit or aid in the “offense.” He named all the countries, orgs and individuals just as “examples” of names he wanted obfiscated to protect diplomatic relations.

Meng Sopheary, Sokha’s lawyer, said if the crime dates back to 1993, the prosecution had not evidence to show “when, where and with whom” the alleged crime was committed. She added that the “treason video” was in itself not evidence of an alleged color revolution.

Judges have adjourned Kem Sokha’s trial till next week, giving the defense time to submit all of the evidence they want to use at one go, rather than multiple submissions during the hearing. All sides continued to delve into Sokha career and activities between 1993 and 2007.

Kem Sokha told VOA Khmer that the court was mistakenly characterizing his work as a politician and human rights activist as an attempt to start a revolution. His work had only focused on empowering people who were "uninformed, fearful, hungry".

The presiding judges, prosecution and govt lawyers then questioned Sokha about activities between 1993-2007, bringing up his early political career, starting CCHR and its funding by USAID. Defense lawyers will question him tomorrow and then move on to activities from 2008-2017.

Day 1 of Kem Sokha’s trial has ended with the court ruling that countries linked to the case can be named during the hearings but will have an assigned Khmer letter in the verdict(a public doc). Govt lawyers had requested obscuring country names to protect diplomatic interests.

As pointed out by a few colleagues, govt lawyer Ky Tech referred to Yugoslavia as a country that was linked to the Kem Sokha trial and then even called Taiwan a country - diverting from Cambodia's stated support for the 'One China' policy. Oops, I guess.
