Apparently the pirate accents are from the Saxon areas of England, suggesting most pirates (and thus most colonialists) were Saxon.

The "pirate" accent is so-called because of one movie from 1950. It's a Bristol accent (so, yes, Saxon). Bristol was a major port, so it makes sense, but English pirates would have had a wide mix of accents, probably including plenty of London and Newcastle.

Johnny Depp's Keith RIchards' London + trans-Atlantic + a bit of random whatever mix accent in his movies is paradoxically probably pretty realistic too. A lot of these guys would have basically lived at sea from early childhood.

It's been pointed out to me that the land-based part of Treasure Island is actually set in Bristol, so that's the obvious accent for Long John Silver.
