That doesn't fly anymore, but adapting will be hard. The big story here lately has been the large group of immigrants who came legally from the Caribbean 50+ years ago who are now being hassled because they have no papers.

the national ID thing is really low friction, come to think of it. you don't hassled, but you can't do anything without it.
