Myth: Galileo was persecuted by the Church because Xtianity hates teh science. Fact: Galileo openly insulted the Pope in book form. When found guilty at his -third- heresy trial, his punishment was the horrifying 'stop talking about that.'

Meanwhile, folk like Johannes Kepler made the exact same telescopic observations as Galileo, and managed not to get hauled into court by the Inquisition even once.

Galileo most likely got off on his first two Inquisitions and got a slap on the wrist for the third because he was of sufficient status to meet personally with two Popes, Paul V and Urban VIII. Heretics get to meet the Pope all the time, right? ...right?

Straight from La Wik: "Bellarmine [Galileo's first Inquisitor] did not regard it as permissible to advocate the [theory as literally physical] unless it could be conclusively proved through current scientific standards." What a tyrant! Look at this backwards dark ages peasant!

Alan Turing was persecuted because he refused to stay in the closet. He insisted on being an illegal activist. Galileo was persecuted - if we can even call it that - because he refused to stop picking fights.

I don't think Turing was trying to be an activist, he was just autistically unaware of what was tolerated and what wasn't.

He was repeatedly forgiven for breaking the law. If you break the law, and receive the punishment outlined under the law, don't then turn around and cry about injustice. Especially in a democracy.

As I understand it, the laws were against buggery or public indecency. The former was practically unenforced due to difficulty of obtaining evidence. Unless someone turned up at a police station and volunteered a signed statement.

As I understand it, they suggested he drop the burglary charges rather than hand in a signed statement to the effect that he was a criminal, and he declined. Not to mention certain other indiscretions about his property which I don't recall in detail.
