For comparison, a greatest-of-all-time horse could easily sell for millions, so if you look at it that way, it's an incredible bargain. (Eggs/semen cost much less, but also won't be anywhere near the parents in performance on average.)

There's a lot more to horse competitions than just thoroughbred racing, and I imagine at some point they'll bow to common sense and allow clones. (It's how these things go. First IVF is an offense to all that is holy, then 2 or 3 decades later it's just normal medicine.)
