It always struck me as one of those situations where a business co-opts something that's a threat then kills it. RSS readers had no ads.

A large proportion of Google Reader users migrated there after Bloglines shut down. RSS readers easily could have had ads. But their user base was (a) small and (b) hostile to that.

Of course. RSS readers have different customers to Google or FB. Google doing an RSS reader was always in opposition to its core business.
